Assisi Roundtable Conference

October 25, 2024

A vibrant and engaging discussion on AI, neurodiversity, and inclusion with an exceptional group of school students. These young minds not only took the time to research and present their views but also demonstrated an admirable openness to debate, ask questions, and explore different perspectives with grace and respect—even when they disagreed. Their energy was infectious, and their enthusiasm to experiment with new ideas on the spot was inspiring.
The energy in the room was electric! As one student asked a question, another was already searching for the answer, while yet another offered a counterpoint. The room buzzed with ideas bouncing back and forth, each participant questioning not only others but also themselves—fully immersed in the process. What made this even more special was the atmosphere of co-creation, not competition. Every discussion, debate, and inquiry was driven by a shared goal of collective learning and growth. The enthusiasm to explore, challenge, and collaborate was truly inspiring.
The conversation naturally centered around the complexities of AI, its potential for both support and harm. It’s not a simple yes or no when it comes to using AI; rather, the focus is on how, when, and by whom AI is used. What might be a supportive tool for one person could be disabling for another, raising important questions about inclusion. Should the voices of those for whom AI has worked be the loudest, or should we also prioritize the experiences of those for whom it has caused harm? Learning from both sides is key, and these ongoing, open conversations are crucial. What's most concerning is when these dialogues come to an abrupt end when a few loud voices take over and crush the other. What I saw here amidst children is each voice having its space seamlessly!
A special highlight of the session was the opportunity to connect with Dr. Lincoln, whose journey surely needs to be heard and understood. From receiving an autism diagnosis at age 34 to transforming from a pediatric cardiac surgeon to a music maestro, he now uses his platform to actively advocate for others to find and embrace their true, authentic selves with dignity. He voiced his apprehensions about the blanket and rampant use of AI, cautioning that while AI can be a powerful support tool, it should enable all forms of expression rather than being used to "fix" or "fit" someone into the "norm." The poignant questions of ...How does AI learn? Who is teaching it and How..matters...
As always, Assisi Vidya Niketan continues to lead the way in initiating these important discussions. A heartfelt thanks to the management, the our dear amazing Rose, without whose heart, head, and soul this event wouldn't have been possible. To the SKET team led by Athul, whose dedication provides the backbone and shape to each such event.
Thrilled to have been a part of this team once again, and I can't wait to see what's brewing next!
