I was recently asked to conduct a motivational session, and it turned out to be a unique experience as I listened to narratives from individuals with cross-disabilities in the same audience. What struck me profoundly were the simple, fundamental needs and rights expressed by all: - The need to be heard - The desire to be seen - The longing to be understood - The yearning to belong In the session, I simply passed around the microphone and asked each mother what motivated her to attend. Their responses spoke volumes: - They felt their children were finally invited somewhere. - They sensed a welcoming environment. - They appreciated being outdoors. - They valued the freedom to just be themselves. - They cherished the opportunity to express themselves without fear of being stared at. - They found solace in discussing common issues and being understood without being labeled as special, different, or difficult. The gratitude showered upon me afterward was overwhelming. It was humbling to realize that all they needed to feel motivated was to be heard. Additionally, economic barriers prevented some fathers from joining, as there wasn't enough money to cover lunch expenses. Despite these challenges, two courageous mothers have taken the lead in organizing these sessions without any financial compensation, solely with the aim of creating a space where individuals can be seen and heard. They deserve more support, particularly financial assistance, as addressing basic survival needs takes precedence over discussing topics like Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or life skills. I appeal to any corporates or associations willing to sponsor any amount to please come forward and lend their support. Reflecting on this experience, I am deeply moved by the realization that sometimes, the most powerful form of motivation comes from simply listening.
