Feminism and Autism, a contrast between two “isms”
May 23, 2024
Let’s draw a contrast, a comparison grand, Between two "isms," let’s understand. “Ism,” a suffix, nouns from verbs, Describes a practice, principle, or terms.
In this tale, we speak of two, Feminism and autism, to view. Each a movement, each a fight, For respect, for equal light.
In days of old, a fight began, Where women stood and took a stand. Not to dethrone the men in power, But to claim their rightful hour.
The feminist cause, a noble plea, For equity and dignity. To be seen, to be heard, to have their say, And not be pushed or brushed away.
It wasn't a war on men they sought, But equal chances, fairly fought. Yet somewhere on this righteous quest, The mission strayed, became a test.
Some shamed those who chose to stay, At home with kids, their own way. While others praised this newfound role, Dignifying care as a worthy goal.
Women took on every task, Balancing both, a mighty ask. Burning out with double loads, Male bashing down the winding roads.
In another realm, a similar plea, For neurodiversity. Not to fit the "normal" mold, But to be valued, voices bold.
Autism's fight, like women's before, Asked for respect, nothing more. Different needs, like all the rest, Support and love, they are our best.
Each story here is unique, profound, Each journey different, boundless ground. Men's perspectives matter too, Just as neurotypicals do.
The ultimate fight is not a war, Not against men or norms of yore. But all of us, with hearts that beat, Seen and heard, our needs to meet.
Let’s shed the shame, the blame, the fight, And strive together for the right. To validate each voice and dream, For in our unity, we glean.
Self-advocates and parents’ cries, Professionals with keen, clear eyes. Every voice, each song, each tale, In harmony, we shall prevail.
From birth, a female's fate was grim, A curse, a burden, prospects slim. Feticide claimed many lives, In shadows deep, hope seldom thrives.
Autism too, a dreaded name, A diagnosis met with shame. Doomsday prophecies, burdens grim, What could be, seemed faint and dim.
Feminism changed this dark refrain, To show that women’s worth is plain. Capable, strong, with value clear, Their voices rang, for all to hear.
So too, neurodiversity now rise, Showcasing worth through different eyes. Autistics can contribute too, If chances aren't denied, they’ll bloom.
The narratives both sought to change, Perceptions wide, and far, and strange. To see the value, in each life, And end the needless, senseless strife.
Yet imbalance reigns in opportunities, More for men, for neurotypicals, you see. To restore the balance, we need not fight, But lift other genders, neurodiversities, in flight.
In the realm of women, just as within autism's sphere, Each individual's needs, let us hold dear. Respecting differences, within our circles too, In unity, diversity, our strength will brew.
This fight's not a denial of disorder or disease, Nor of diagnosis, which might bring unease. It's against the denial of identity's core, To be seen as whole, nothing less, nothing more.
It’s not to blur the lines between, The biological truths we’ve seen. Differences in male and female, And neurotypicals, who prevail.
Men navigate a patriarchal world, Neurotypicals, in an ableist swirl. It’s not to shame or lay the blame, But to lift all voices, just the same.
With feminism's rise, our aim was clear, Not to slot women high or low, based on how near They mimicked men's ways or conformed to their mold, But to value their worth, their stories untold.
Similarly, neurodiversity's quest, Is not to rate autistics by how they best Adapt to a world designed by the ableist view, But to honor their strengths, their perspectives true.
The common thread is clear to see, For all deserve equality. To be respected, valued, heard, Not one voice silenced, not one word.
Let's honor each and every soul, In unity, we'll reach our goal. Together strong, we rise above, In shared respect and boundless love.
