insights with parents of preschoolers.

March 23, 2021

I appreciate Chithra Unnikrishnan for providing me with the opportunity to share essential insights with parents of preschoolers. It's crucial for parents to make informed choices when it comes to their children's education, particularly in the context of different educational philosophies.    Education, I firmly believe, commences at home, where your children spend a significant portion of their formative years. To encapsulate these essential considerations, I often use the acronym "SAFE" as a quick reference guide:     S - Slow Down:   It's vital to acknowledge that nothing was lost in the past year, and there's no rush to catch up. Your children were in their safest spaces – their homes with you. Emphasize the development of skills over the rigid pursuit of subjects. Start with fundamental self-help skills, including toileting, brushing, bathing, dressing, grooming, and involving them in basic household chores. Prioritize keeping screens away at least two hours before bedtime. Additionally, maintain effective communication with the school for vital support.     A - Allow Mistakes:   Encourage your children to make mistakes; it's a part of learning. When they falter, motivate them to try again. Establish basic rules at home, teaching them the importance of seeking help when needed.     F - Embrace Failure:   Understand that not every day will be perfect, and that's perfectly fine. Nurture their curiosity, let them ask questions, and be there to provide answers. Focus on developing strong communication skills – both speaking and listening. Ensure they finish tasks they start and teach them how to clean up after playtime.     E - Encourage Physical Activity:   Children are bundles of energy. Promote physical activity and understand that their emotions are often expressed through their behaviors.   In summary, education starts at home, and these principles can help create a nurturing and supportive environment for your preschoolers.
