Our Brain: The Hidden Computer That Needs Support Too Imagine your brain is like a computer. There are parts you can see and touch, like the keyboard, mouse, and screen—just like your hands, legs, and eyes that we can see and use every day. But there’s also the inside of the computer, the parts we can’t see, like the processor and circuits, which make everything work. That’s just like our brain—it does so many things, but we can’t really see how it’s working inside. Our brains are amazing because they help us think, feel, and sense the world around us. But here’s something cool to know: we all think, feel, and sense differently. The 8 Senses: How Our Brain Makes Sense of the World We have 8 sensory systems—not just five! Our brain decides: What to focus on (e.g., Do I listen to music or notice the smell of cookies?) What meaning to attach (e.g., Does that loud noise mean danger or just a door slamming?) How to respond (e.g., Do I jump up, stay calm, or ask for help?) For some of us, it’s easier to focus on one sense—maybe we’re more visual, auditory, or touch-focused. But what if the brain gets confused? What if it: Focuses too much on one sense (e.g., sounds feel overwhelming)? Ignores another sense (e.g., doesn’t notice hunger)? This can make everyday life hard, and sometimes, people need support to function their best. How Can We Help? A simple way to support someone is to ask: "What do you need right now?" "How can I help?" And also to observe: Is someone struggling with too much noise or light? Are they avoiding certain activities? Disability Day Pledge (Dec 3rd): Support, Ask, and Normalize Let’s pledge to: 1️⃣ Normalize asking for help. It’s okay to need support. 2️⃣ Offer support. If someone seems to be struggling, be kind and ask how you can help. 3️⃣ Understand neurodiversity. It brings creativity and fresh ideas to our world, but it can also make life harder for some people. While differences are what make us unique, some challenges can hold us or others back. Together, we can make sure these differences don’t become barriers. Let’s voice our needs and help others do the same. ✨ A more inclusive world starts with small steps. Let’s take them together. #DisabilityDay #Neurodiversity #Inclusion #SupportEachOther
