the realm of child therapy

August 17, 2017

In the realm of child therapy, there exists a burgeoning landscape of interventions aimed at helping children with neurological issues. While the intention behind these therapies is undoubtedly good, we find ourselves facing a situation that warrants scrutiny. These therapies can be expensive, time-consuming, and, in some cases, may even prove detrimental. It's high time we reevaluate our approach. First and foremost, we must underscore the importance of parental involvement and supervision in child therapy. Parents are the primary advocates for their children, and their presence in therapy sessions is vital. They understand their children's needs like no one else, and their insights can greatly inform the therapeutic process. The ultimate goal, whether for neurotypical or neurodiverse children, is functional independence. We want our children to lead healthy, happy, and safe lives without undue dependence on others. This is the benchmark against which all therapies should be measured. To facilitate better decision-making in this complex landscape, I propose the SMARTER approach. SMART, as in Specific, Measurable, Accountable, Respectful, and Transferable. Each of these attributes helps us make informed choices for our children's therapy. Furthermore, ER—Expectant, Responsible, and Rights-based—guides us in being proactive and ensuring that our children's rights are upheld. In this context, I introduce the TogetherWeCan movement, a collective of parents of children with neurological differences and their allies. Together, we advocate for the rights and justice of children with disabilities. We've taken action by filing a public interest litigation to regulate therapy centers and ensure the safety and well-being of all children. In conclusion, child therapy demands a critical reevaluation, with parental involvement and the pursuit of functional independence as cornerstones. The SMARTER approach and movements like TogetherWeCan provide a roadmap for better decision-making and advocating for our children's rights. It's high time we put our children's well-being at the forefront of all child therapy efforts. https://www.patientsengage.com/news-and-views/empowering-parents-make-smart-therapy-choices?fbclid=IwAR08QYagR0Bea3SJmybSnUgJ3silK1LkG5AZT5KuNqp9fQSi82FKdGmqu_s#sthash.Y4xRruI0.gbpl
