What does it mean to be a THERAPIST?
December 6, 2021
In a video presentation primarily in Malayalam with a sprinkling of English, I continued my dissemination work on the theme of "What does it mean to be a THERAPIST?!" The presentation featured slides that were largely self-explanatory.
I emphasized the importance of including the lived experiences of those we aim to support, whether we are professionals, practitioners, therapists, coaches, or trainers. I highlighted the following key points:
- Experience in itself doesn't equate to expertise. Just because someone has faced a problem doesn't mean they have mastered the solution.
- Expertise or deep knowledge about a subject doesn't automatically translate to wisdom. Wisdom involves knowing when and where to apply that knowledge.
- Education is an ongoing experience, and experience is a lifelong education.
- True expertise combines both education and experience.
- It's crucial to include the lived experiences of others before attempting to support them.
This presentation underlined the significance of acknowledging and incorporating the real-life experiences of individuals when providing support or guidance in any professional capacity.
