What does it mean to be a THERAPIST?

December 6, 2021

In a video presentation primarily in Malayalam with a sprinkling of English, I continued my dissemination work on the theme of "What does it mean to be a THERAPIST?!" The presentation featured slides that were largely self-explanatory.   I emphasized the importance of including the lived experiences of those we aim to support, whether we are professionals, practitioners, therapists, coaches, or trainers. I highlighted the following key points:

  1. Experience in itself doesn't equate to expertise. Just because someone has faced a problem doesn't mean they have mastered the solution.

  1. Expertise or deep knowledge about a subject doesn't automatically translate to wisdom. Wisdom involves knowing when and where to apply that knowledge.

  1. Education is an ongoing experience, and experience is a lifelong education.

  1. True expertise combines both education and experience.

  1. It's crucial to include the lived experiences of others before attempting to support them.
This presentation underlined the significance of acknowledging and incorporating the real-life experiences of individuals when providing support or guidance in any professional capacity.
